For the past 6 years of living in Georgia we had a family tradition of going to the beach on Christmas Eve. Some years we had light jackets on and others we were in shorts but we loved the fact that it was always nice enough to go to the beach. Now that we're back in Oregon we were forced to come up with a new Christmas Eve tradition...

...ice skating with Santa. There is an outdoor skating rink here in town that has a yearly Santa skate. My kids have never been on ice skates and this picture of Ashlyn pretty much sums up how the 2 hour session went...

...not good! Ashlyn was in tears as soon as I laced on her skates and she saw the other skaters.

Blake was in tears about 1/2 way around the rink for the first time and wouldn't let go of the wall. It took us 45 minutes to get skates on and make it around the rink twice! I'm happy to report that Blake only fell a couple of times and Ashlyn only once, but ya would've thought the world had come to an end when they did fall. Plus we didn't have to leave the skate session early for a trip to the ER...I'd say it was a pretty successful first skating experience!

After TONS of tears from both of them and pleading like they've NEVER pleaded before to go home, they realized we weren't leaving early and they better make the best of it. The last 30 minutes or so Ashlyn admitted that she was having fun and wanted to come back. Blake admitted that maybe it wasn't so bad the last 10 minutes, but recanted his opinion on the way home. Final opinion - they DON'T want it to be our new family Christmas Tradition, so the search continues for an Oregon Christmas Eve activity.

How many times did you fall? I am with the kids, ice skating isn't so fun. I love your new coat!
