Fast forward quite a few years and 2 kids later...and I find myself remembering all those nights. There were many fights amongst siblings about who's turn it was to wash and who's it was to dry, along with lots of grumbling and fighting as we washed the dishes...but there were also lots of memories of laughter, water/soap fights and some nasty towel fights that left welts on our arms and legs but smiles on our faces. Our rental house we're living in while we sell our house has a dishwasher that broke almost 3 weeks ago. Good news as a renter, we're not responible for going and buying a new one! Bad news, we have to wait until they get around to doing it. They did come out last week to try and fix it, but it was beyond repair. Good news -we get a new one, but who knows how long it will take.
So this afternoon after an early dinner in between sessions of Conference I broke the news to Blake that today was his lucky day to learn how to wash dishes by hand, because I'm sick of doing it. He wasn't real happy at first, but when Ashlyn volunteered to help him buy rinsing them all they actually didn't seem to mind it!

oh yes, the memories that were made. They will like doing it for a few days and then it will get old.
Madison will unload an entire load of dishes. She leaves the knives on the counter, but other than that she does pretty good. This will come in handy here in a few weeks when I will not want to do much!
Blake's been loading/unloading the dishwasher for a long time...but washing by hand is a whole different thing. His comment was, "Why do I need to learn to do this when we have dishwashers?" He didn't believe me that in college I didn't have one and it wasn't until we were married for 5 1/2 years that we had one...not to mention a washer/dryer! Oh the luxeries! :)
The no dishwasher thing must be a McDowell-ism. My mom never had one until all of us had moved out of the house. :( We didn't have one in Lagos and I HATED it when we'd have people for dinner and I'd have to hand wash a bunch of cups and oh how I hate silverware! Yea for a dishwasher except ours is junky, but still better than nothing.
Well, I know it's why *I* had kids...hee hee.
Although mine are still at the stage where they just play with the bubbles, dang it.
