Another Little Reader!

The last couple of weeks Ashlyn has been walking around the house telling us what letter various things start with and random pairs of rhyming words. So I decided to start playing some games with her that I played with Blake at this age...-ar, -at, -an, etc. word families written on index cards for matching games, seek and find games and building sentences games.

She did really well, so yesterday I picked up the first level of BOB Books from the library to see how she'd do. She is happy to report that she's the newest reader in the family. She breezed through the 1st set of 4 books last night, so we'll see how she does with the 2nd set today!

Here's a little sample of her "literary selections" so far....

Book #1 - Mat
Mat.
Mat sat.
Sam.
Sam sat.
Mat sat. Sam sat.
Mat sat on Sam.
(Which she found hilarious and couldn't stop laughing about!)
Sam sat on Mat.
Mat sat. Sam sat.
The End

Book #2 - Sam
Sam and cat.
Mat and cat.
Sam, Mat and Cat.
Cat sat on Sam.
Mat sat on Sam.
Sad Sam. Sad Mat.
Sam sat. Mat sat.
OK, Sam. OK, Mat, OK, cat.

The End

Book #3- Dot
Dot has a hat.
Dot has a cat.
The cat has a hat.
Dot has a dog. Dog has a hat.
Dog has a rag hat.
Sad dog.
Sad Dot. Sad cat.
Dog has on a rag hat.
The End

Book#4 - Mac
Mac had a bag.
The bag had a dog.
Mac had a bag and a dog.
Mag had a rag.
Mac can tag Mag.
Mac got the rag.
Mac sat on the rag.
Mag sat on the bag.
The End

Talk about EXCITING reading material! Seriously though, even though they are VERY corny books, they're GREAT for beginning readers. They start simple and each book gets harder and introduces new concepts. This is the first of MANY levels in the program...we'll see how she does. She was giddy that she got to read her own story at bedtime last night...sooo cute!

Zachary is about the same. He thinks he is so cool that he can read!! Madison brings home these little paper books from school, and we have saved the ones from K, so we are starting those! He will be so ready for kindergarten in the fall! Now if we can just figure out what to do with Madison! You know how it is to have a smart kid!
