I was in charge of the activity for FHE tonight and chose to work on some Family History Indexing. I ended up downloading batches of the 1915 Iowa Census to work on so it would be easy to read for the kids and wouldn't have too crazy of names to try and decipher. Blake has done it before so I downloaded him a batch and he got to work on his own with Rick helping every so often if he couldn't read somebody's handwriting.
Since Ashlyn is younger we were going to work on it together, with me doing most of the work. She started out inputting the card number, age, marital status and their race since they were easy to read. However, after a couple of names she was able to do their birthplaces too and I only had to read/input the person's name.
Blake was kind of grouchy that I picked some place boring like Iowa but they were quick to discover that some of the people were born in Austria, Germany, England and Luxemburg and had immigrated to Iowa, which made it a lot more fun! They laughed that one of the questions on the census form was if somebody was literate, blind, deaf or an idiot...they laughed really hard about that one for a long time! I still am not sure if Ashlyn believed me when I explained that it was referring to somebody who was mentally handicapped.
Then we finished off the evening with homemade maple bars - yummy! I had already planned a couple of weeks ago that I was going to do this when it was my turn for the activity...but our ward has weekly Ward Challenges from the bishopric...this week's was to participate in Family History Indexing!
