I am a Boy Scout merit badge counselor for cooking, family life, scholarship, reading and music. The boys had me come last fall to start the cooking merit badge but we haven't been able to find a good time to go on a hike and cook two meals along the trail for their last requirement. So a few moms accompanied me yesterday out to Harris Park just outside Milton Freewater for a 4 1/2 mile hike.
One night this fall Rick helped them all make their own cat stoves to use - light weight, burned long enough to boil water and didn't leave a mess on the outside of your pan which was perfect for hiking.
We got out to the trailhead a cooked instant oatmeal for their breakfast. The boys all stuck their nose up at it but were surprised how yummy it was.
One of the boys tried to make scrambled eggs and ended up getting it to work, but by the time he finished all the others had eaten and washed their dishes down at the river.
They were annoyed at all the pictures we took throughout the day...photo opps are the MAIN difference between moms taking them out and going with their scout leaders!
We couldn't have asked for better weather. It was a beautiful day!
Cup O Noodles and Top Ramen were on the menu for lunch.
Cooking their lunch was a lot easier after we figured out all the tricks by trial and error making their breakfast.
And you can't take teenage boys anywhere without stopping for ice cream on the way home.
It ended up being a fun day...even if the husbands were a little nervous about us ladies taking them out. We are happy to report that to the best of our knowledge no forest fires were started because of our endevours. However, one of the moms doesn't have any hair left on her left arm after a mishap at breakfast. Luckily it was her own kid's fault though.
