Ashlyn participated in the Altrusa Spelling Bee this weekend. We were shocked when she said she wanted to since she hates getting up in front of people and being the center of attention. (She told us yesterday that she loves to play softball but will only play until Middle School because then the crowd is too big watching in the stands at that point) She did great and ended up 7th place...getting out on the word "squirt", which was really frustrating when all the other words after she got out were common everyday words that were spelled just like they sound - nobody, choice, teacher, sometime, picnic, yarn etc. The kid who got out right before her had "bouquet"...even more unfair!
And unlike when Blake did it a few years ago, if a word was spelled wrong, they told them how it was spelled and moved on instead of making the next person spell it. She was a good sport and took it like a champ though, but said she didn't want to do it again next year. The prizes have gotten pretty lame instead of the iPods and Kindle Fire HDs they did the year Blake won, so we said we were fine with her not doing it again. She is proud to report she knows how to spell "squirt" now though!
