Yee Haw!

Today I went with the kids out to Heavenly Acres, a rodeo arena the next county over, for a field trip. Boy did it bring back memories of all the rodeos we went to as kids growing up.The bull riding was definitely all the students' favorite event...those guys are crazy to get on that thing...the last bull bucked the cowboy off before he even got out of the shoot! Somehow he jumped up and ended up standing on his hind legs with his front hooves OVER the gate. Calf roping was next...Blake was shocked when the cowboy jumped off his horse and threw the calf on the ground to tie up his legs. Then they did barrel racing. One of the riders was a kid in Blake's class - look how little he his! He ended up beating all the adults that ran by a LONG shot, that kids was soooo fast. After he was done with his portion he came and sat with Blake and I and explained everything that was going on. It was fun to learn a little behind the scene information. Then the Principal Mrs. Stefani tried her hand at the event...it didn't start out too well so the clown ended up grabbing the reins and running through the course with her. Then it was team calf roping...2 of the calves made it to the pen before they could get 'em!Lastly, Mrs. Stefani and the Vice Principal Mrs. Anita were challenged to calf roping (without the horse). Mrs. Anita just stood there, but Mrs. Stefani was a hoot! She was able to lasso it pretty quick, but she wasn't strong enough to reign it in...it end up dragging her through the dirt face first! Eventually she was able to, but wasn't strong enough to flip it over, so the other cowboys came in for some back up. Then she jumped on the thing and was able to tie up its hooves pretty fast. After all the various activities (and a picnic lunch) Ashlyn said she couldn't decide which was better the rodeo events or getting to ride the school bus for the first time! It was a fun day and kinda makes me want to go to a "real" rodeo again.
