Traded our Boogie Boards for Sleds

Soooo sad, I know! I would MUCH rather be at the beach soaking up the sun, but those days are over so we decided we better get in on the various activities here. (Notice I've left the family beach picture up to the right of this post though...I'm not totally ready to embrace our winter wonderland quite yet.)So we headed up to Crater Lake for the day to check out the scenery and see if we could find some hills to sled on. The closer we got the more and more snow there was, the kids were so excited! It made for some beautiful views.
Here's our first glimpse of Crater Lake for everybody but Rick. Unfortunately, it was only in the teens and the wind chill up on the rim was below zero. So we posed for a quick picture, commented on how pretty it was and headed back to the car after 5 minutes...kind of a let down but our faces were numb to the point we couldn't feel our lips to talk properly (which was HILARIOUS!) and we couldn't feel our fingers, which was pretty painful.
Once we got off the rim of the crater the wind stopped so we decided we'd have a little fun. The snow was so powdery that when Blake tried to make a snow angel it just foofed it around like feathers almost and as soon as he stood up it all fell back into place.
The snow was so deep the kids had a hard time walking in it. We were trying to cross in an area with driffs and the kids didn't make it very far before they were both flat on their faces.....
Luckily they had a good laugh about it though. Then we found a hill that we thought might be a great beginner hill for the kids to learn to sled on. Check out how deep it is though! Rick and Blake blazed a trail by walking up and down the hill about 4 times before we dared send a sled down it.
Even though it barely had any incline to it the kids had a blast and got it wore down enough that they were FLYING down the hill.
Blake has been sledding in Oregon before we moved to Georgia, but since he was only 3 when we left he doesn't remember it. They were both a little apprehensive about it at first, but got the hang of it quick and loved every minute of it.
They were pretty bummed when they realized the ride down was WAY shorter than the walk back up and that they each had to drag their own sled back up if they wanted to ride down again.
They played on the hill for about 2 hours before a big storm started rolling in and we figured we should hit the road so we wouldn't have problems getting back down to town.
It's a good thing that we went and got ourselves outfitted with winter gear because it's suppose to start snowing here this afternoon and by tomorrow at lunch time our accumulation is predicted to be 8-14 inches....and it's suppose to snow EVERY day in the next 7 day forecast. Eeesh! Maybe our kids will finally experience the joy of a snow day from school, we LIVED for those as kids!!

Omigoodness. We've had almost no snow so far and I'm so thankful! But at least you guys went and did something fun. Hopefully we'll do that too when the time comes...
